Works with Sand

The Sand Works cover a short but intensive period of a few years in the 1990s.

They are explorations, grounded in the landscape that has informed my work since I became a painter more than 60 years ago. The  sand on the Sussex coast and in the ground under my studio below the South Downs was one of several local materials I began to use from the 1990s onwards. I see in them the same concerns about composition and balance in a space that are central to my paintings.
