Works in Wood

Growing up in an artist’s studio, surrounded by woodland, trees have been part of my life and my work as an artist as long as I can remember. Observations of their forms, textures and colours influence my work and provide a source of new ideas to this day. 

The Big Storm of 1987 had a profound effect on my work as a painter. The loss of woodland and some of my main subjects was a contributing factor that brought a long period of painting outdoors to an end. At the same time, large quantities of fallen wood had become available, and that opened up new creative possibilities. It gave my work another dimension.
