Paintings 1960 - 1989

Growing up in the Sussex countryside, the view across farmland, towards the South Downs, and later the view looking down at the Wealden landscape with patterns of field boundaries, plough lines and paths are recurring themes. 

Other subjects covered during that time were land- and seascapes in Scotland and the Sussex coast on Selsey and occasionally flower arrangements.
Gradually, my work became more abstract. A series of paintings of the landscape seen from the top of the South Downs in the 1970s was followed by many years of working within the local landscape, in woodland close to my studio during the 1980s.
The Big Storm of 1987 changed this landscape completely, and this coming together of changes in the landscape and in my own work, was the beginning of a new period.
